Moving to New Servers

October 23rd, 2007 by ryan

ScrewdriverWith the increasing popularity of invotrak, we’ve had to deal with scaling invotrak up. One of the first things we had to do was rethink our database setup: luckily we were able to make some fundamental changes that sped it up quite a bit. But unfortunately, we’re now at a point where we need to start throwing some bigger hardware around. So, this weekend, we’re moving invotrak to new servers!

What this means is two things: during the move, you will not be able to access invotrak. The bottleneck is not with the move (that shouldn’t take more than a few minutes), but rather with updating the address. When you type “www.invotrak.com” into your browser, your computer looks up the actual address of the server where the site is running (think of it as a telephone book: you know the name of the person you would like to call, but you need to match that name with the actual telephone number – same principal). The problem here, though, is the telephone book can take some time to fully update.

The move will be happening this Saturday night (October 27th), at 10pm EST or thereabouts. This should give it plenty of time to update for Monday.

Update 1: The move has been made and the DNS servers should update within the next four hours or so.

Update 2: Looks like things should be back to normal now in invotrak’s new home!  Let us know if you have any problems.

Thought I’d provide some additional information. First, this blog will still be available during the move, and we’ll be providing status updates to keep you alerted to what’s going on. And second, aside from noticing speed increases, you should no longer get messages like “Something went wrong” from time to time. That message is due to the way the current server is configured, and shouldn’t be an issue in the future.

Thought you should know; still getting the following:

We’re sorry, but something went wrong.
We’ve been notified about this issue and we’ll take a look at it shortly.

The invoice still gets posted just fine but it gives this error for some reason.

Thank’s for letting us know – we’ll see if we can figure it out.

    Hey Ryan,

    Awesome service, lovin’ infotrak!

I get the error that WAV mentions above, too…

If you need any more info etc. let me know!

… I just found that if you uncheck the “go to send email” option under settings, you no longer get the error when recording a new invoice…

Good news: that bug with recording invoices has now been fixed! Thanks to Cam S and WAV for helping track it down. The issue was occurring for users who had not set a default email template to use, and the site was directing the user to the send email page after recording a new invoice.

Be sure to let us know if you come across anything else.
